RENEWED OPTIMISM FOR A 2021 RACE SEASON WITH OPEN FOR SUMMER PLAN

The sport of chuckwagon racing has been faced with a storm of emotions and challenges the last few months with show cancellations and uncertainty. When the Calgary Stampede recently announced they would be cancelling chuckwagon racing from their 2021 event, fans and sponsors stormed to social media to express their displeasure and concern for the sports future.

Sometimes to see the sunshine you have to weather the storm. Earlier today when the Alberta Government confirmed Stage 2 of the Covid-19 Alberta Open For Summer Plan will be activated on Thursday June 10th, there was renewed optimism that the Covid-19 storm causing race cancellations may finally be coming to an end and the horn for a race season would actually sound in 2021.

The key component of Stage 2 for outdoor events is the Outdoor Fixed Seating Facilities (Grandstands) restrictions.  As of June 10th, WPCA venues will now be permitted to host 1/3 of seating capacity.  Some WPCA organizing committees have already confirmed they can host an event with 30% of seating capacity.

What the wagon world has their eyes set on is Stage 3 where all restrictions will be lifted.  The Alberta Government has stated that two weeks after 70% of Albertans 12+ have been vaccinated with one dose all restrictions will be lifted. It is projected this will be achieved by late June or early July.

Over the last thirty days Bonnyville, Medicine Hat and Ponoka have all postponed their scheduled June dates to either July or August pending date availability.  The Strathmore Stampede announced weeks ago their show was on and they would make any adjustments necessary to comply with whatever Covid-19 restrictions are in place at the time of their event.  High River had already scheduled their races for July and with Dewberry recently announcing they would be hosting WPCA drivers July 1st – July 4th a confirmed revised race schedule for 2021 may only be days away.
