Cloudy skies and a comfortable 16°C greeted competitors and fans on Championship Sunday at the 2026 Grande Prairie Stompede Championship. Despite the overcast conditions, the racetrack held up well for the $40,000 Championship Final Heat featuring Obrey Motowylo, Darcy Flad, Troy Dorchester, and Luke Tournier.

When the dust settled, defending champion Obrey Motowylo, driving the Dynamic Energy Group Inc. outfit and assisted by outriders Ethan Motowylo and Hayden Motowylo, successfully defended his title to capture the 2026 Grande Prairie Stompede Championship and the $20,000 winner’s cheque. It’s the first time that the Grande Prairie Stompede has had a back-to-back winner since Jerry Bremner in 2007 and 2008, Neal Walgenbach in 2005 and 2006, and Norm Cuthbertson in 2003 and 2004.

Competing from barrel position number one in the Championship Final, Motowylo recorded a clean run of 1:15.27 to claim his fourth career Grande Prairie Stompede title. He crossed the finish line 95 one-hundredths of a second ahead of 2019 Grande Prairie champion Luke Tournier, who placed second from barrel position number three. Darcy Flad finished third from barrel position number two, while Troy Dorchester completed the Championship Final field in fourth place from barrel position number four.

In the nightly standings, Mitch Sutherland and the Westcore Contracting outfit captured the Kirk’s Trail Tire Wheels on Fire Award with the fast run of 1:15.24 from barrel position number one in the third heat. Sutherland’s time was just three one-hundredths of a second quicker than Motowylo’s championship-winning run. Tuff Dreger and Jamie Laboucane shared third and fourth place on the evening, while Chad Fike rounded out the top five fastest times.

The WPCA Pro Tour presented by GMC now heads to Bonnyville, Alberta, for the Bonnyville Chuckwagon Championship, which runs from Thursday, June 4 through Sunday, June 7. Jamie Laboucane enters the event as the defending champion.

Live coverage begins Thursday, June 4, at 8:00 p.m. Eastern, 7:00 p.m. Central, and 6:00 p.m. Mountain Time on 96.5 The Ranch. Fans can also listen through the WPCA website, iHeartRadio, and Radioplayer Canada, while live video coverage will be available through the WPCA livestream at watch.wpca.com.
