The World Professional Chuckwagon Association is grieving the death of longtime active supporter Percy “Dusty” Woznow, on Friday, October 20, 2023, at the age of 91 years.
Dusty and his wife Agnus opened Dusty’s Barn Dance and Saloon in 1985, just four blocks from the Calgary Stampede grounds, and over parts of the next 3 decades, “Dusty’s” became a longtime venue for country music, Calgary Flames Hockey, and of course the Calgary Stampede and Chuckwagon Racing. A number of chuckwagon related events were hosted at Dusty’s Saloon.
Dusty first got involved as an active supporter with the chuckwagon races at the 1991 Calgary Stampede with driver Herman Flad, and again in 1993 with driver Stu Napper under the canvas of Dusty’s Saloon.” Dusty and Agnes were proud to be chuckwagon sponsors. In 1997, Dusty and Agnes continued to support the chuckwagons and various charities through the Calgary Firefighters and their “Firewagon” at both the Calgary Stampede and the North American Chuckwagon Championship in High River.
Over the years, fifteen different chuckwagon drivers carried the “Firewagon” canvas in some form or another., including the likes of Layne MacGillivray, John Lumsden. Doyle Mullaney, Cody Ridsdale, Tyler Helmig, Grant Profit, Todd Baptiste, Wayne Dagg and Jason Johnstone in the North American Chuckwagon Championship in High River, and Roger Moore, Bruce Morin, Wayne Dagg, Jess Willard, Rod Salmond, Grant Preece and Luke Tournier at the Calgary Stampede. Dusty and Agnes remained a part of the “Firewagon” until they disbanded in 2008.
Dusty leaves behind his sons Gerry (Cori), Darrell (Sherry), and Wes (Karen); granddaughters, Jennifer (Kyle), Samantha, and Kristen; great-grandson Rory, and great-granddaughter Ryanne.
