It was a hot 28 degrees celsius in the Lakeland, as the finals of the Bonnyville Chuckwagon Championship were run on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. When the dust settled, Obrey Motowylo, driving the Choquet Insurance Group Ltd – The Co-operators outfit, and along with outriders Ethan Motowylo and Hayden Motowylo, won the Championship Final heat and the 2023 Bonnyville Chuckwagon Championship. It was a wire to wire win for Motowylo who had been in first place since opening night.
Coming off barrel number 3 in heat number 10, Motowylo won the championship final by 85 one-hundreds of a second over reigning World Champion Layne MacGillivray who placed second from barrel number 2. Rae Croteau Jr., who crossed the finish line first, knocked over a barrel and had to settle for third place overall in the championship final from barrel number one, with Mitch Sutherland, who crossed the finish line in third place, also knocked a barrel and was pushed back into fourth place overall from barrel number two.
On the day, Ross Knight, driving the Koda Trucking outfit, posted the fast run of the week with a rapid 1:16.21. That put him 46 one-hundreds of a second faster than Jamie Laboucane who placed second for the day. Chanse Vigen was third, Codey McCurrach was fourth, with 2023 Bonnyville Champion Obrey Motowylo filling out the top fives times on the final day of competition.
The WPCA Pro Tour will now head to Dewberry, Alberta for the Dewberry World Chuckwagon Races starting Friday June 16, 2023 and running through to Sunday, June 18, 2023.
