Wade Salmond – First Career First Place Run On Night 5 In Calgary

For the fifth consecutive day weather and racetrack conditions have been perfect at the 2024 Calgary Stampede Cowboys Rangeland Derby. Toss in some capacity crowds and you have the recipe for one of the most spectacular chuckwagon races available. When the sun finally set on Stampede Park in Calgary, Wade Salmond, driving the De Havilland Aircraft of Canada Ltd. outfit, who recorded the best time of the night with a penalty free run of 1:10.81. It’s the first time that Wade Salmond has won the day money at the Cowboys Rangeland Derby.
From barrel number 3 in the 6th heat, Salmond was the top wagon on the night by 75 one-hundredths of a second over Rae Croteau Jr. who made his fourth top three run in five days. Chad Fike placed third, defending Cowboys Rangeland Derby Champion Layne MacGillivray was fourth, while Kurt Bensmiller and Obrey Motowylo split fifth and sixth on the night.
With five consecutive penalty free runs, Chad Fike continues to lead the overall aggregate standings with a five-run total of 5:59.26. That puts him exactly 1.60 seconds ahead of Rae Croteau Jr., with Chanse Vigen hanging on to third place overall. Defending champion Layne MacGillivray moved up to fourth place overall, 79 one-hundredths of a second out of third, with Jamie Laboucane completing the top five overall.
The top 3 in the overall aggregate standings after Saturday, July 13 2024, will go into the championship final heat. The winner of the championship final heat will be declared the 2024 Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby Champion.
