It was a night of celebration as one hundred years ago today, the first official chuckwagon races were held at the Calgary Stampede. Despite a little rain pre-race, night 3 of the Cowboys Rangeland Derby ran on a warm Sunday night, the capacity crowd witnessed an outstanding and competitive night of racing, and for the third consecutive night the track record fell. When it all played out on this historic evening, it was former World Champion Chuckwagon Driver Obrey Motowylo who bested everyone with a new record time of 1:09.61
For the second consecutive night, barrel number 2 in the 9th heat gave up the day money, but this time to Motowylo was the top wagon on the night by a large 1.20 second margin over Layne MacGillivray. Jamie Laboucane placed third, followed by Chanse Vigen, with Kurt Bensmiller filling out the top five on the night. It’s the first time the 1:10.00 mark has been broken by anyone on the Calgary racetrack.

Chanse Vigen continues to lead the overall aggregate standings with a three-day total of 3:33.08. That puts him 1.09 seconds ahead of Kurt Bensmiller with Obrey Motowylo jumping into third spot overall, while Layne MacGillivray and Kris Molle occupy 4th and 5th place respectively.
The top 3 in the aggregate after Saturday, July 15, 2023, will go into the championship final heat. The winner of the championship final heat will be declared the 2023 Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby Champion.
