Another incredible day of chuckwagon racing at the 2024 Calgary Stampede Cowboys Rangeland Derby. Track and weather conditions have remained fantastic, and fast times have been norm. For the first time this week, the 1:10.00 barrier was broken, and the result was a new track record for Jason Glass after he posted a time of 1:09.45.
From barrel number 2 in the 9th heat, Glass, driving the Birchcliff Energy Ltd. outfit was the top wagon on the night by 75 one-hundredths of a second over 2012 Rangeland Derby Champion Troy Dorchester. Rae Croteau Jr. placed third, Obrey Motowylo was fourth for the second consecutive night, with Chad Fike rounding out the top five on the night. It’s the second time that Jason Glass has won the day money this week. Glass broke the old track record of 1:09.61 that was set by Obrey Motowylo back just last year.
Chad Fike has regained the lead in the overall aggregate standings with a seven-day total of 8:22.89. That puts him just 88 one-hundredths of a second ahead of day money winner Jason Glass, with yesterday’s leader Chanse Vigen holing onto third place overall. Defending champion Layne MacGillivray slid up one spot and is now sitting fourth overall, 2.66 seconds back from a possible spot in Sunday’s Championship Final Heat, with former World Champion Obrey Motowylo filling out the top five overall. The top 3 wagons at this time are separated by less than a second.
The top 3 in the overall aggregate standings after Saturday, July 13 2024, will go into the championship final heat. The winner of the championship final heat will be declared the 2024 Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby Champion.
