A respected veteran of the chuckwagon circuit, Mitch Sutherland has built a twenty-season career defined by consistency, leadership, and a 2023 WPCA Chuckwagon Person of the Year honour. A two-time WPCA Pro Tour winner, Mitch reached the Calgary Stampede Championship Final Heat in 2016, with one of his horses also earning Equine Athlete of Excellence honours.
In 2025, Mitch recorded ten top-ten runs, including two top-five runs, with his best result a seventh-place finish at the Ponoka Stampede where he reached the semifinal. A second-generation driver, he is the son of Kirk Sutherland and began racing on the Western Chuckwagon Association (WCA) circuit in 2004, winning back-to-back championships in 2008 and 2009, along with twelve show titles.
He is a former University of Alberta Golden Bears football player, earning All-Canadian honours, and was drafted in 2002 by the Montreal Alouettes. Mitch owns Hitch’Em Oilfield Hauling and lives in Grande Prairie, Alberta with his wife Heather and their two children – Emerson and Weston.
