Get to Know More About the Driver

Carrying forward one of chuckwagon racing’s most storied legacies, Dayton is a two-time champion of the Battle of the Rockies and a Top Rookie Driver honouree on both the WPCA Pro Tour and at the Calgary Stampede. His 2025 season saw him record eight top-ten runs, highlighted by a top-ten overall finish at the Battle of the Foothills.

As an outrider, Dayton captured the 2024 Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby Championship with the outfit of Jason Glass. He also earned the Richard Cosgrave Memorial Award as Calgary’s Aggregate/Safety Champion in 2023 and was the Rod Glass Memorial Award winner as Most Improved Outrider in 2016. In 2022, he was a co-recipient of the WPCA Media Award for his work on the After the Ninth podcast.

A late addition to the 2016 WPCA Pro Tour, Dayton made his professional driving debut at the Battle of the North in Dawson Creek—creating a rare distinction as three generations of the Sutherland family competed at the same meet.

A third-generation competitor, Dayton is the grandson of chuckwagon legend Kelly Sutherland and the son of former driver Mark Sutherland. He enjoys hockey, music, and anything with wheels, including quads and dirt bikes. Dayton studies at the University of Lethbridge and makes his home in DeWinton, Alberta.
