The youngest member of the famed Sutherland chuckwagon racing family, 2024 was a special year for Dayton. Not only did he debut as a chuckwagon driver at the 2024 COWBOYS Rangeland Derby, he won the Calgary Stampede’s Orville Strandquist Memorial Award for the Top Rookie Driver at the Calgary Stampede, and also won his first Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby as an outrider with Jason Glass’ championship Outfit. He posted nine top ten runs with two of those runs placing inside the top five, and outrode for Jason Glass’ winning outfit that captured the Century Downs WINNERS’ ZONE Series and the Wild West WPCA World Chuckwagon Finals Aggregate Championship at the season ending stop in Ponoka.
In 2022 Dayton was a co-winner of the 2022 WPCA Media Award for his work on the “After the Ninth” Podcast. He was a late addition to the 2016 WPCA Pro Tour and made his debut as a professional chuckwagon driver at the Battle of the North in Dawson Creek, giving the Sutherland family a rare and unique distinction of having three generations of drivers competing in the same race meet.
Dayton was named the WPCA’s Top Rookie Driver in 2017, and was the recipient of the Rod Glass Memorial Award for Most Improved Outrider in 2016, and is a two-time champion of the Battle of the Rockies.
A third-generation chuckwagon competitor, Dayton is the grandson of chuckwagon legend Kelly Sutherland and the son of former driver Mark Sutherland. He enjoys playing hockey, loves music, and anything with wheels such as quads and dirt bikes. Dayton is single and makes his home in DeWinton, Alberta.
