A colorful individual and top ranked chuckwagon driver, 2023 saw Darcy, for the first time, have a horse named to the Calgary Stampede Equine Athlete of Excellence. 2023 also saw Darcy post twelve top ten runs including three runs that cracked the top five. Top ten overall finishes at the COWBOYS Rangeland Derby and the Strathmore Stampede were his best of the year. At the 2022 COWBOYS Rangeland Derby, Darcy won the day on opening night, and briefly held the track record.
Darcy is a two-time Colonial Days Fair champion, a three-time Colonial Days Fair Aggregate Winner, and a former winner of the WPCA Top Rookie Driver and Most Improved Driver awards. In 2015 Darcy established a new track record at the Colonial Days Fair and qualified for championship final heat at the Grande Prairie Stompede – the first of his career in a major chuckwagon event. Darcy is the eldest son of former Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby Champion the late Herman Flad, and father to fellow driver Layne Flad.
A rancher in the off-season, Darcy is a graduate of Olds College and has two children – Layne and Cheyenne-Jill. He lists hockey, rodeo, team roping and hunting among his other interests and hobbies. Darcy and his wife Richelle make their home in Bodo, Alberta.
