It was a strange Friday night of chuckwagon racing at the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede. Much like night nine at the 2023 Cowboys Rangeland Derby in Calgary last year, the evening started off with perfect weather and racetrack conditions. But at the midpoint of the program, the clouds opened up producing heavy rains and hail, slowing the racetrack down by nearly five seconds for the last 6 heats of the night. But when the night was complete, it was D.J. King who emerged as the day money winner after posting a time of 1:02.46. It is the first career day money run on the WPCA Pro Tour for D.J. King.
Coming off barrel number 1 in heat number 2, King, driving the AJS Indigenous Housing Solutions Inc. outfit placed first overall for the day by a mere 2 one-hundredths of a second over Evan Magee. Kirk Sutherland placed third, Jordie Fike placed fourth and Chance Bensmiller rounded out the top 5 for the night.
After 2 runs, Evan Magee sits atop the overall aggregate standings with a two-day total time of 2:06.03. That puts him 21 one-hundredths of a second better than Chance Bensmiller. Day 1 winner Chanse Vigen sits in the very valuable third place overall with just one run left to try and earn a spot in Sunday’s Championship Final Heat. Kirk Sutherland sits just 14 one-hundredths of a second outside the top three in fourth place overall with day money winner D.J King and Josh Hrynyk tied for fifth place overall after two days.
The top 3 drivers in the aggregate after Saturday night will go into Sunday’s championship final heat. Winner of Sunday’s final will be crowned the 2024 Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede Championship.
Day 3 of the Medicine Hat Stampede can be heard live on Saturday night, June 22, 2024 at 9:00pm Eastern, 8:00pm Central, and 7:00pm Mountain time on New Country 910.
