Hot and exciting was the order of the day on night 6 at the 2024 Calgary Stampede Cowboys Rangeland Derby. The capacity crowds were brought to their feet as some of the best chuckwagon drivers in the world were laid it all on the line. After the crowd settled down upon completion of the evening races, Chanse Vigen – “The Rangeland Derby Rockstar” – driving the KMA Construction & KMA Scaffolding Services outfit, who stopped the clock in a penalty free 1:10.03 to take the top time not only of the night, but of the race meet so far.
From barrel number 1 in the 8th heat, Vigen was the top wagon on the night by 43 one-hundredths of a second over 2013 Rangeland Derby Champion Jason Glass who had to settle for second on the night. Jamie Laboucane placed third, Obrey Motowylo was fourth, with Cody Ridsdale rounding out the top five on the night. It’s the second time this week that Chanse Vigen has posted the night’s top time.
The day money run has vaulted Chanse Vigen to the top of the overall aggregate standings with a six-run total of 7:11.42. That puts him just 16 one-hundredths of a second ahead of days 4 and five leader Chad Fike, with Jamie Laboucane moving up into to third place overall. Jason Glass now occupies the crying hole, sitting fourth overall but just 32 one-hundredths of a second out of third, with defending champion Layne MacGillivray now in fifth place overall.
The top 3 in the overall aggregate standings after Saturday, July 13 2024, will go into the championship final heat. The winner of the championship final heat will be declared the 2024 Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby Champion.
