It’s crunch time at the Cowboys Rangeland Derby as a handful of drivers are trying to gain, or hold onto a spot in Sunday’s Championship Final Heat. When the sun went down on a very hot, but comfortable Friday night in Calgary, it was Chanse Vigen who posted the fast time of the week with a rapid run of 1:11.71. It’s the only time the 1:12.00 barrier has been broken this week.
From barrel position number 3 in the 9th heat of the evening, Vigen, driving the Major Pipe wagon, was the top wagon on the night by a large 78 one-hundredths of a second over Kurt Bensmiller who also ran in heat number 9. Vern Nolin won third money on the night for the second consecutive night, while Layne MacGillivray and Codey McCurrach, despite a 1 second penalty, split fourth and fifth place on the night. The ninth heat gave up three out of the top four times on the night.
For the fourth consecutive night, Layne MacGillivray leads the overall aggregate standings with a eight run total of 9:49.99. Kurt Bensmiller has narrowed the gap slightly, in second place but trailing MacGillivray by just 44 one hundredths of a second. There has been a change for the potential final spot in Sunday’s final, as Darcy Flad now occupies third place overall, with Obrey Motowylo dropping down into fourth, but sits just 42 one hundredths of a second out of a qualifying spot, with Kris Molle now rounding out the top five overall with just one run to go to try and earn a spot in the championship final heat. The top 3 in the overall aggregate after Saturday, July 16, 2022 will go into the championship final, where the winner of the championship final heat will be declared the 2022 Calgary Stampede Cowboys Rangeland Derby Champion.
