After a successful Heritage Days Long Weekend in Strathmore, Alberta, the WPCA Pro Tour embarked on Mile “0” of the Alaska Highway in Dawson Creek, British Columbia for opening night at the Battle of the North where Layne MacGillivray came into this year’s event as the defending champion.

Despite a little bit of pre-race rain, by race time the sun was shining, temperature was a comfortable 22°C under a few clouds, and the chuckwagon races were run on very good racetrack conditions in front of an enthusiastic opening night crowd. By the time the sun set, it was 2019 Battle of the North Champion Chanse Vigen opened up the 2023 Battle of the North with the top time on opening night.

Coming off barrel number 2 in heat number 9, Vigen, driving the Nordic Energy Canada Corp. outfit posted a time of 1:16.31 and placed first overall for the day by 15 one-hundreds of a second over Doug Irvine who placed 2nd for the night. Chad Fike was third, while Jamie Laboucane and Chance Thomson rounded out the top 5 for the night.

The top 4 drivers in the aggregate after Saturday’s run will go into the $30,0000.00 Championship Final Heat where the winner of Sunday’s final will be crowned the 2023 Battle of the North Championship.
