After a tremendous Heritage Days Long Weekend in Strathmore, Alberta, the WPCA Pro Tour moved onto Mile “0” of the Alaska Highway in Dawson Creek, British Columbia for opening night at the Battle of the North where Rae Croteau Jr. came into this year’s event as the defending champion.

The sun was shining, temperature was a comfortable 22°C under a few clouds, and the chuckwagon races were run on very good racetrack conditions in front of an enthusiastic opening night crowd. By the time the sun set, Chanse Vigen continued his hot run and for the second consecutive year, he opened up the  Battle of the North with the top time on the night.

Coming off barrel number 1 in heat number 9, Vigen, driving the Sundown Oilfield Services Ltd. outfit posted a time of 1:14.46 and placed first overall for the day by 99 one-hundreds of a second over Wade Salmond who placed 2nd for the night. Defending champion Rae Croteau Jr. was third, Chad Fike was fourth, while Troy Dorchester and Layne MacGillivray split fifth place on the night.

The top driver in the aggregate after Saturday night will get a one-year lease of a 2024 GMC Truck courtesy of Banister GM Dawson Creek. The top 4 drivers in the aggregate after Saturday’s run will go into $30,000.00 Championship Final Heat where the winner will be crowned the 2024 Battle of the North Champion.

Night 2 of the Battle of the North can be heard live action on Thursday night, August 8, 2024, on WPCA Radio at 9:30pm Eastern, 8:30pm Central, and 7:30pm Mountain time on New Country 92.5 FM Drumheller, 93.3 FM Stettler, 105.7 FM Brooks, 94.9 FM Blairmore, 92.7 FM Pincher Creek, or streaming options are available through the WPCA Website at wpca.com, iHeart Radio website/app or the Radioplayer Canada website/app. The Battle of the North can also be watched live on the WPCA Livestream at watch.wpca.com.
