The first WPCA Tarp Auction of 2023 will take place in Grande Prairie, Alberta on Saturday April 1 in the Tara Centre at Evergreen Park. Titled the “2nd Annual WPCA Tarp Auction Gala & Fundraiser” this event will kick off 5 months of WPCA action that will include spring training, tarp auctions and energy filled racing.
The Tarp Auction is a sale in which companies, pooled groups or individuals compete through a bidding process with the intent to win the rights to advertise on a chuckwagon driver’s tarp during the Grande Prairie Stompede from May 31 – June 04. Winning bidders not only win the rights to showcase their company on a chuckwagon tarp, they also receive a list of features and benefits along with a unique experience only offered to winning bidders.
In 2022, a sold out crowd of over 500 people filled the Tara Centre in Grande Prairie for the WPCA Tarp Auction and Gala. Veteran driver Rae Croteau Jr. made his return to the WPCA as a permit driver after a 6 year absence and recorded the highest bid when Kaidak Energy Services outbid all competitors with a final bid of $26,000.00.
38 drivers and their wagon tarps were up for bid in 2022 with the average bid coming in at $9,700.00.

Proceeds from the event will support chuckwagon racing in the region and the UNBRIDLED program. Unbridled is a youth-focused trauma program. This innovative, equine-assisted learning program will guide youth in building coping strategies and skills to better deal with stress and traumatic situations, and support those who have encountered a traumatic event while they work through and process the experience with the help of a mental health professional and a horse partner.
