Personal Information
After ten years in the wagon box, John has compiled a very impressive resume. In 2018 his horse "DANCER" was named to the WPCA Equine Outfit of Excellence as the Champion Right Leader for the second consecutive year, and qualified for the championship final at the Medicine Hat Stampede where he was also the aggregate winner. 2018 saw John post 10 top ten runs, including 3 first place runs and 5 runs that also placed inside the top five. In his relatively short career, John has made his mark with 4 show championship wins, three horses named to Calgary Stampede Equine Outfit of Excellence, three horses name to the WPCA Equine Outfit of Excellence, winning the WPCA Clean Drive Award in 2017 and receiving the Herman Flad Memorial Award for the WPCA’s Most Improved Driver in 2011. John’s chuckwagon career began in 2009 on the Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Association (CPCA) circuit before making the move up to the WPCA in 2010. Prior to driving chuckwagons, John competed as a rodeo cowboy for over 20 years in the Saddle Bronc Riding and Steer Wrestling events, winning overall Saddle Bronc Championships in the Manitoba Rodeo Cowboys Association, the Lakeland Rodeo Association, and the Canadian Cowboys Association, and a year end All Around Championship in the Canadian Cowboys Association as well. Originally from Czar, Alberta, John's father Wordon Walters raced thoroughbred chuckwagons, chariots and pony wagons for many years starting in the late 1940's, and his brother Ken Walters is a current driver on the CPCA circuit. John is a rancher and is the owner of John Walters Fencing - a custom fencing business in the off season - and enjoys hockey, hunting and being with horses. John and his wife Bonnie have six children, twelve grandchildren and make their home in Delburne, Alberta.
