Personal Information
With less than ten seasons of driving chuckwagons professionally under his belt, John has demonstrated that he is a force to be reckoned with. 2016 saw John record 18 top ten runs, including 3 first place runs and 6 runs that also placed inside the top five. He made the championship final at the Grande Prairie Stompede and mad the semi-final round at the Calgary Stampede GMC Rangeland Derby. He placed inside the top ten overall at 6 shows, with a pair of runner-up finishes in consecutive shows at the Bonnyville Chuckwagon Championship and the Strathmore Stampede being his best of the year. John’s horse "WHITEY" was named Champion Outriding Horse on the Calgary Stampede Equine Outfit of Excellence, and another horse "DORCHY" was named Champion Left Wheeler on the WPCA Equine Outfit Of Excellence. His 5th place finish in the World Standings tied his career best. In his short career, John has won two WPCA Show Championships at the Saskatoon World Chuckwagon Races and the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede, and in 2011 John won the Herman Flad Memorial Award for the WPCA Most Improved Driver. He has had two horses named to the Calgary Stampede Equine Outfit of Excellence and one name to the WPCA Equine Outfit of Excellence. John started his career in 2009 on the Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Association (CPCA) circuit before making the move to the WPCA in 2010. Prior to driving chuckwagons, John competed for over 20 years in Saddle Bronc Riding and Steer Wrestling, winning overall Saddle Bronc Championships in the Manitoba Rodeo Cowboys Association, the Lakeland Rodeo Association, and the Canadian Cowboys Association, and a year end All Around Championship in the Canadian Cowboys Association as well. Originally from Czar, Alberta, John's father Wordon Walters raced thoroughbred chuckwagons, chariots and pony wagons for many years starting in the late 1940's, and his brother Ken Walters is a current driver on the CPCA circuit. John is a rancher and is the owner of John Walters Fencing - a custom fencing business in the off season - and enjoys hockey, hunting and being with horses. John and his wife Bonnie have six children, twelve grandchildren and make their home in Delburne, Alberta.
