Personal Information
The most senior and longest competing outrider in professional chuckwagon racing today, Wayne just completed his 30th season as a professional outrider, and won the Grande Prairie Stompede for the second time in his career behind Kurt Bensmiller. Wayne is a six-time Calgary Stampede GMC Rangeland Derby champion, a five-time Calgary Stampede Aggregate winner, and a record nine-time Ponoka Stampede Championships with seven different drivers. He outrode for Buddy Bensmiller's two World Championships in 1997 and 2001, Reg Johnstone’s 2005 World Championship, and Kurt Bensmiller’s World Championship in 2015, as well as being a co-recipient of the Rod Glass Memorial Award for most improved outrider in 2005. Wayne started his career as a member of the Northern Professional Chuckwagon Association (NPCA, now CPCA), and was named the NPCA’s Top Rookie Outrider in 1987. He won his first buckle at the Cheyenne Frontier Days outriding for Buddy Bensmiller which he still considers the highlight of his career. Wayne has won over 100 buckles in his career, and has outrode for three generations of Croteau’s – Ray Sr., Bert, and Rae Jr., and three generations of Bensmillers – Allan, Buddy and the three boys David, Kurt and Chance. He graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Commerce in 1990, is a Chartered Accountant and runs WRW Chartered Accountant in Vermilion, Alberta. Wayne lists traveling, scuba diving, hockey, and rodeo among his interests, and makes his off-season home in Blackfoot, Alberta.
