Personal Information
Known as the “High Tech Redneck,” for his use of GPS technology as a tool for chuckwagon training, 2018 saw Mark win the Calgary Stampede's Safe Drive Award for Least Penalized Driver for the third time, he qualified for the Calgary Stampede’s championship final for the second time, and had a horse named to the Calgary Stampede Equine Outfit of Excellence. 2018 saw Mark post 21 top ten runs including 3 first place runs and 7 runs that also cracked the top five. He had 3 top ten overall aggregate finishes with a split of second and third at the GMC Rangeland Derby being his best of the year. Mark was honored with the WPCA's Chuckwagon Person of the Year in 2011, won the Calgary Stampede's Orville Strandquist Award for Top Rookie Driver in 1996, won the WPCA Clean Drive Award in 2009, and had a horse named to the WPCA's Equine Outfit of Excellence in 2011. Mark has qualified for the GMC Rangeland Derby’s “Semi-Final Saturday” four times and hosts his own annual charity poker tournament. A 2nd generation chuckwagon driver, Mark is the son of chuckwagon legend Kelly Sutherland. Mark and his wife Dina, have two children - Kiera and driver/outrider Dayton, - and two grandchildren, and make their home near Dewinton, Alberta.
