Kurt Bensmiller Continues His Dominance Of The GMC Rangeland Derby On Night 6 In Calgary

Day 6 of the Calgary Stampede GMC Rangeland Derby was run under perfect weather and racetrack conditions in front of a capacity crowd. When the sun started setting on Calgary, overall leader Kurt Bensmiller, driving the Versatile Energy Services outfit, ran the fast time on the night with a 1:11.56.

Coming off barrel number 3 in heat number 9, Bensmiller won the day money by just 9 one-hundredths of a second over 2016 GMC Rangeland Derby Champion Kirk Sutherland, with Chance Bensmiller, Rick Fraser and Logan Gorst making up the top five times on the night.

The day money run just adds to Kurt Bensmiller’s lead in the overall aggregate standings with a six-run total of 7:14.74. That puts him 3.82 seconds faster than Rick Fraser, with Vern Nolin, Mike Vigen’s outfit which has been driven all Stampede by his son Chanse Vigen, and Mark Sutherland completing the top five. Jason Glass, Logan Gorst and Evan Salmond complete the top eight after six runs, with Kris Molle and Codey McCurrach filling out the top ten with just two runs to go to qualify for Semi-Final Saturday.

The Richard Cosgrave Memorial Trophy, symbolic of the Calgary Stampede aggregate winner will be declared after 8 nights on Friday, July 13, and the top 8 in the aggregate on that day will go into “Semi Final Saturday.” The top 4 times from the two semi-final heats on semi on Saturday on July 14 will go into the winner-take-all championship final heat. The winner of the final heat will be declared the 2018 Calgary Stampede GMC Rangeland Derby Champion.

Live coverage of day 7 of the 2018 GMC Rangeland Derby can be heard on Thursday night, July 12, 2018, starting at 7:30 on Rural Radio Channel 147 on SiriusXM, Country 99 at 99.7 FM out of Bonnyville, and AM 700 The Light out of Calgary, with 96.5 CKFM out of Olds picking up the final weekend. Television coverage can be seen live on CBC and Sportsnet One all ten nights starting at 8:00pm.
